Buckpool Golf Club

Possibly one of Scottish Golfs best kept secrets, slightly elevated above the sea, the course boasts unbeatable views across the Moray Firth towards the hills of Caithness. Built on sand, Buckpool has fast, rolling fairways, often lined by tall mature gorse bushes. Swailes and hollows are littered around the approaches to slick undulating greens, so precious some are protected by cavernous bunkers providing golfers of all abilities an enjoyable challenge.

Buckpool Golf Club is one of these clubs that is frequently labelled as a “hidden gem”! In this case, it could not be more apposite. Located on the North East coast of Moray with extensive views over the Firth to the hills of Cromarty, the scenery from the course is stunning.

Originally the course was laid out to a design conceived in 1933 by J H Taylor, who along with James Braid and Harry Vardon were better known as The Great Triumvirate for their series of Open wins between 1891 and 1914. It was JH Taylor who in 1901 was the co-founder and first chairman of the Professional Golfers Association. After winning his second Open in 1895 staged at St Andrews Taylor commented “It is a very real question of steadiness and a capacity for controlling your nerves that is rendered a necessity for the playing of the proper game!” A comment that is as true today as over 120 years ago.
